The Swami Temple, located along the I-88 corridor in Aurora, IL was installed in the spring of 2008. The 30-Acre site was newly graded due to an adjacent roadway construction project and the Temple hired Pizzo & Associates, Ltd. to install approximately 900+lbs of native seed and 300 - 2” caliper tree species selected for their vigor and durability. Three site specific seed mixes were formulated and installed throughout the project, including one for along I-88 to minimize maintenance efforts and tolerate the winter salt spray associated with major transportation corridors. The seed mixes were comprised of 20 native species sourced locally and installed utilizing no-till drill application techniques.
The complex project included gradient changes, on-site treatment basins and noise abatement installations that required close attention to detail on the part of the project manager. Each treatment created unique microclimates that possess highly variable characteristics, necessitating customized seed mixes and manual seeding. Stewardship is ongoing and includes mowing, herbicide application and prescribed fire.
Overall, the project has resulted in a highly diverse native planting providing a naturalistic view-shed from I-88 to the ornate Temple building. The owner’s have since mown walking trails throughout the natural area, which are used by members for reflection and contemplation.
