John Humphrey Woods

John Humphrey Woods is a public park owned and operated by the Village of Orland Park, Orland Park, IL. This project involved the restoration of a remnant Oak-Hickory Savanna. This remnant system was infested with invasive species, including but not limited to Buckthorn, Honeysuckle, Boxelder, and Garlic Mustard.

Pizzo & Associates, Ltd. was contracted to conduct restoration planning for Humphrey Woods in 1998 and began clearing operations in the winter of 2000. Clearing involved the removal of Buckthorn, Honeysuckle, and other invasive species.

Pizzo & Associates, Ltd. started Stewardship activities immediately following clearing and we continue to steward Humphrey Woods to this day, including the application of professional prescribed fire.

No supplemental seeding or planting has been conducted; all of the species present were existing on site have thrived with clearing and the reintroduction of fire.
